Each year, numerous healthcare simulation events are held to help gather simulationists worldwide. Together, these events are used to spread industry awareness, highlight new innovations and promote immersive technologies. Despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, multiple clinical simulation events were held during 2021, many of which were either designed to be virtual or switched to a virtual platform. SiMULCON India 2021: Driving Collaborative Practice Through Healthcare Simulation
Game-changing innovations are not created in a vacuum. They require vision, imagination, and the ability to see what does not yet exist. This only really happens when a truly multidimensional team comes together to share ideas and collaborate. The more diversity in terms of geography, gender, culture, and education – the more likely disruptive innovation can prevail (Banovetz, 2018). The members of the Society for Healthcare Simulation (SHS India) took this message to heart when organizing this third annual healthcare simulation conference. Coordinators of this year’s SiMULCON India optimized the conference theme of Driving Collaborative Practice Through Simulation, by assembling a multifarious group of healthcare simulationists.

During the last week in November 2021, the Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) opened with the Congressional Modeling and Simulation Caucus signature event, which included Congressman Bobby Scott, Stephanie Murphy, and Jack Bergman. AWEXR Showcased the Latest Mixed Reality Technologies for Healthcare Education & Training

ASPiH 2021 Challenges Healthcare Simulation Professionals to Move Upstream, Facilitate Change
As healthcare simulation is constantly evolving, sharing the latest insights helps facilitate industry-wide advances. To accomplish this each year, the Association for Simulated Practice in Healthcare (ASPiH), a UK-based non-profit membership organization formed in 2010, hosted a clinical simulation conference and brought together the greater healthcare simulation community. This year’s conference made virtual due to the coronavirus pandemic, featured the theme “Moving upstream — using clinical simulation to improve systems.” This article, written by HealthySimulation.com contributor Jeanne Carey, explains how this theme applies to healthcare simulation and shares pivotal moments from the ASPiH 2021 virtual conference.
Australasian Simulation Congress – November 9-11, 2021
Hosted by Simulation Australasia (SimAust), the national body for those working in simulation in Australasia, the 2021 Australasian Simulation Congress took place virtually from November 9 to November 11, 2021. The event brought together the SimHealth, SimTecT, and Serious Games streams, and there will be opportunities for a number of joint sessions of mutual interest. This year explored the theme of “Simulation – Navigating Uncertain Futures,” meant to reflect today’s uncertain times marked by massive global changes, rapidly moving the healthcare industry into unprecedented and unknown directions.
Telesimulation is becoming an increasingly important topic across the fields of medical education and training. Sponsored by Weill Cornell Medicine New Presbyterian Simulation Center and brought together over 100 simulationists from across the globe, the 2nd Annual International Telesimulation in Healthcare conference was held on September 23, 2021. Participants gathered to hear from some of the pioneers in telesimulation, a virtual simulation strategy that uses web-based videoconferencing technologies to connect educators, learners, and clinical simulation modalities occupying physically separated spaces. During these sessions, the instructor observed the learners in real-time and provides immediate feedback during the debriefing. The telesimulation platform can also be used as a professional development tool; an experienced simulation educator can directly observe and support new healthcare simulation facilitators operating from a remote location.
European Simulation Research Network (SiReN) Virtual Meeting October 14, 2021
As part of the organization’s strategic plan, the European Simulation Research Network (SiReN) is has announced a third SiReN meeting following an inaugural event at the SESAM 2019 meeting in Glasgow. This year’s European Simulation Research Network (SiReN) Virtual Meeting will take place on October 14, 2021, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. All healthcare simulation researchers and educators are invited to attend this virtual event and encouraged to come prepared to network and learn from industry peers. After the organization’s inaugural meeting established some network principles and assigned volunteers to key roles SiReN is now excited to focus this upcoming meeting on current research projects. Further, the organization intends to have direct mentee-mentor discussions and will include mini-workshop-like sessions on simulation research topics relevant to the SESAM audience.
The COVID-19 pandemic is causing a burnout epidemic in healthcare practitioners around the world. Headlines announce increasing shortages of doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers. The news articles go on to outline the implications of too many patients and too few caretakers. The real issue is not a lack of trained individuals, but rather, the decreasing number of providers who are willing or able to work at the patient’s bedside. This article shares some related issues as discussed at the IPSSV2021 healthcare simulation conference from September 17 to 19, 2021.
World Patient Safety Day 2021 Emphasizes ‘Safe Maternal and Newborn Care’
This year, World Patient Safety Day took place on September 17, 2021, once again during Healthcare Simulation Week! The World Patient Safety Day was established in 2019 by the World Health Organization to increase public awareness and engagement, enhance global understanding, and spur global solidarity and action to promote patient safety. Despite continuing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, a combination of virtual and other activities are being planned by WHO to observe and celebrate this day. On this year’s World Patient Safety Day, the WHO urged all stakeholders to “Act now for safe and respectful childbirth!” with the theme “Safe maternal and newborn care.”
Healthcare Simulation Week 2021 Promotes Community Globally
Each year, Healthcare Simulation Week provides an opportunity for the global simulation community to come together to share information and insights from across the industry. This year’s Healthcare Simulation Week will take place from September 13 to September 19, 2021. To raise awareness about clinical simulation professions (i.e. Simulation Operations Specialists and technologists, researchers, educators, and other specialists advocating for healthcare simulation in education, practice, and research) and to celebrate those who undertake such work, organizations and companies planned a number of simulation events during this year’s observance — which coincided with World Patient Safety Day on September 17.
SSH’s SimOps 2021 Simulation Operations Conference Opens at CAMLS Tampa
The 2021 SimOps event opened on July 15, 2021 at the University of South Florida’s Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) with over 100 in-person attendees and more participating virtually from around the world. Organized by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), this year’s theme was to “Unify” the community following the chaos of COVID-19, as this is in fact the first in-person healthcare simulation conference since the global pandemic began, with masks still required within the simulation center during the entire event.
ASPE 2021 Virtual Conference | June 27-30, 2021
The 2021 Association of Standardized Patient Educators (ASPE) Annual Conference is a virtual experience that took place from June 27-30, 2021. The healthcare simulation conference is meant to provide a space where a community of healthcare simulation educators, researchers, creators, and practitioners can share their practice of turning visions into reality through human simulation. Ultimately, the ASPE Conference Committee created this conference to engage, showcase creative works, stimulate professional development, and provide ongoing opportunities to network and collaborate.
INACSL Virtual Conference 2021 | June 16-18
The 2021 INACSL Conference took place virtually from Wednesday, June 16 through Friday, June 18. Each year, this event serves as a leading forum for simulation aficionados, researchers, and vendors. This is to provide the ideal environment to gain and disseminate state-of-the-art knowledge in the areas of skills/simulation operations and applications in an evidence-based context. During the virtual simulation conference, healthcare professionals had the opportunity to network with colleagues and exhibitors, discuss best practices related to competencies, safety, and quality performance indicators, and advance the science of simulation.
I/ITSEC 2021 to Focus on Adapting to an Unexpected Future
The Interservice/Industry Training, Simulation and Education Conference (I/ITSEC) is the world’s largest modeling, simulation, and training event. The simulation conference consists of peer-reviewed paper presentations, tutorials, special events, professional workshops, a commercial exhibit hall, a serious games competition, and STEM events for teachers and secondary students. This year’s conference, themed “Innovating and Accelerating Training: Adapting to an Unexpected Future,” was held from Nov. 29 to Dec. 3, 2021, in Orlando, Florida.
IPSS Virtual Spring Symposium: Simulation Transforming Safety
The International Pediatric Simulation Society (IPSS) promotes and supports multi-disciplinary simulation-based education in caring for infants and children. Although focused on pediatrics, the 2021 IPSS Virtual Symposium focused on two general healthcare simulation topics which relate to all age groups. The symposium explored the use of healthcare simulation through the lens of Safety II to address healthcare resiliency and adaptability and the application of design thinking to simulation to test systems. The morning keynote address was given by Dr. Carl Horsley, Intensivist for Counties Manukau Health, Auckland, New Zealand, and Clinical Lead for Patient Safety, Health Quality and Safety Commission. Dr. Horsley reviewed problems with the current model of safety (Safety I) and then examined a new view of safety (Safety II) with an emphasis on the new model’s meaning for simulation.

Depuis 27 ans, la Société européenne de simulation appliquée à la médecine (SESAM) a permis aux passionnés de simulation de toute l’Europe et du monde de trouver un espace commun d’apprentissage et de partage, malgré la différence de culture, de langue et d’organisation des institutions. On oppose parfois la barrière de la langue pour ce genre de réunion. Cependant, l’utilisation de la langue anglaise par des natifs de différents pays comme la France, l’Espagne, la Pologne, la Suisse, l’Allemagne permet de se comprendre sans trop de difficultés. Par conséquent, les gens n’ont pas de frein à l’interaction sur des sujets communs qui nous passionnent. Le langage est spécifique et technique et les participants sont bienveillants les uns envers les autres à cet égard.
CALSIM 2021: Cedars-Sinai Hosts First Virtual Healthcare Simulation Conference
The Inaugural CALSIM 2021 healthcare simulation conference is designed to inspire, inform and interconnect clinical simulation professionals responsible for various roles in medical simulation centers. Hosted by Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, the virtual event will take place on Friday, April 9, and Saturday, April 10, 2021, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. PST. The healthcare simulation conference provided participants with evidence-based presentations that explore how clinical simulation can be used as an innovative tool for learning and training, as well as for the assessment of performance. Note, this year’s event was supposed to launch last year but unfortunately due to COVID19 it was pushed — and looks to be well worth the wait!

CAE Healthcare presented a smorgasbord of indispensable clinical simulation training solutions to the 2021 International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) during the 11-week virtual conference far. These forward-looking innovations undeniably demonstrate CAE’s mission to transform healthcare simulation through reliable education technology. To fulfill this mission, the company has worked to expand upon a portfolio of technologically-advanced simulation-based training resources to meet the evolving needs of healthcare education. Virtual Conference: IVRHA 2021 VR Health Symposium
The 5th Annual International Virtual Reality and Healthcare Association (IVRHA) launched the 2021 VR Health Symposium, a global conference that showcases the broad potential of virtual reality in healthcare simulation, which was held from March 2 to March 5 online. This year’s virtual symposium offered networking opportunities, informative plenary sessions, and VR expert panel discussions. This conference was an excellent opportunity for those using virtual reality in simulation to share progress, collectively brainstorm on best practices, and forge high-impact business relationships.
