OSSO VR

OSSO VR is a virtual reality surgical simulation training and assessment platform. The company, founded in 2016 in Palo Alto, Ca., is made up of practicing clinicians, professional medical VR simulation developers and medtech industry veterans.

To have an impact on patient outcomes, learners need training solutions that measure, compare and improve key performance indicators. This is why OSSO VR specializes in hyper-realistic, haptic-enhanced, hands-on interactivity and design.

To open up access to the latest techniques and innovations, healthcare and education facilities need solutions that remotely connect surgeons, sales teams and hospital staff in VP and in the operating room. OSSO VR does just that.

According to OSSO VR, the company was created as a result of an unchanging system of surgical training. The company cites research stating that 30 percent of surgical graduates are unable to operate independently. For this reason, OSSO VR offers a complete surgical simulator service platform to customers that includes custom content creation, a managed hardware leasing and support program, and advanced performance analytics.

With OSSO VR, surgeons are able to practice on the actual device they’ll be using in the operating room. They can practice at any time and anywhere in a completely immersive environment.

This VR platform provides flexibility, as the software can be easily updated and customized. Training on such new technologies is more easily accomplished when combined with onsite training. Learners able to be reached with OSSO VR surgery simulation education modules are also enhanced with OSSO VR, as the system allows for remote mentoring and coaching.

The platform additionally offers high-fidelity simulation because using the tool enables surgeons to practice on the actual device they’ll be using in the field. Collaboration is another benefit created by OSSO VR technology through a virtual operating room with virtual anatomy that allows for collaborative training for the whole team, including Sim Techs, Surgical Technologists and Registered Nurses. Up to 10 staff members can train in one module, regardless of their geographic location throughout the world.

Further, the technical ability and competency of a Surgeon can be seen at a granular level via the OSSO VR measurement tools. The ability to demonstrate that Surgeons and hospital staff are proficient in each procedure increases patient safety and medical device adoption, making the OSSO VR technology pivotal to assist the health system’s education management solutions.

OSSO VR is not just for surgeons. Sales representatives and operating room staff can benefit from this technology and team training scenarios as well. Analytics and user specific dashboards allow for objective assessment and review of technical skill data to increase proficiency insight and maximize patient outcomes impacted by learners who use the platform.

How to Use OSSO VR Simulation Platform Technology

The first step to using the OSSO VR healthcare simulation solution is to set up the hardware and clear the area where the tool will be situated and utilized. Next, the user must calibrate the sensor cameras. As the final step, the learner should launch the desired training scenarios.

When situating the hardware, users should clear a space six feet wide by six feet tall. A minimum of four feet wide of table surface area will be needed (a standard six foot table is ideal). Sensor cameras should be placed one foot from the edge of the table and one foot from the side of a laptop, with the shiny side in front.

Sensors should then be pointed directly forward and slightly upward (not inward). Note, a plug-in laptop provides the best training experience, and external displays are great for multiple person sessions.

When ready to begin calibrating the sensor cameras of the OSSO VR solution, users should turn on their laptop and log in with the provided password. Next, they should open the Oculus Rift application from the task bar, go to “devices,” “configure rift,” and select the “sensor setup” option. Following these steps, follow the prompt and continue with the prompted steps within the headset.

Tips include making sure the user does not enable the Guardian system (they should skip this step during the setup process). Also, if the table height is the same as the last use, this step can be skipped as well.

Lastly, during the launch of the training scenarios, users should always ensure that their laptop is connected to the internet, then open the OSSO VR application directly from the task bar and sign-in (or sign-up for first-time users). For self-directed training for demos, users should select the “Run as Supervisor” option, and subsequently launch the desired training scenario from the tile menu. Those managing these training scenarios should make sure that each user signs in after an initial login.

About OSSO VR

OSSO VR co-founder and CEO, Justin Barad, M.D., set out on a mission to change the way surgical training is executed. As a board-eligible orthopedic surgeon with a bioengineering degree from UC Berkeley, and an MD from UCLA, Barad thoroughly understood the training and education management solution needs of the surgical community.

When a personal family health incident introduced Barad to the world of healthcare, he decided to find a way to combine his passions and use his technology background to solve clinical training problems. Thus, during his residency, he identified the pressing medical challenge involving how medical and educational communities are training their surgeons.

With a strong interest in gaming and a first-hand understanding of the challenges facing residents and experienced physicians, Barad’s mission was to improve patient safety and democratize access to modern surgical techniques. His desire was also to improve patient outcomes, increase the adoption of higher-value medical technologies and democratize access to surgical education around the globe. To achieve this, he created a way for OSSO VR to use virtual reality in medicine to provide the platform, content and tools to bridge the surgical training gap.

To build the leading VR surgical training platform, OSSO VR assembled a team of clinical, medical device and Sim Tech experts from leading institutions, such as Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Medtronic, Microsoft, Zynga and Electronic Arts.

Today, OSSO VR is used by many of the world’s top orthopedic hospitals and device companies. OSSO VR’s content has even been validated in a pilot study which showed that OSSO VR-trained users performed surgery nearly twice as well as those trained via traditional means, according to the company.

Helping to spread the OSSO VR mission and the use of system modules, the company’s clinical simulation training and assessment platform has been presented at a variety of medical simulation conferences, exhibitions and shows, such as those hosted by SimGHOSTS, INACSL, ASPiH, SESAM, and the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSiH).
