The Society for Simulation in Europe | SESAM
The Society in Europe for Simulation, formerly known as The Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine, is the world’s longest running healthcare simulation organization. The mission of SESAM is to encourage and support the use of simulation in health care for the purpose of training and research.
The SESAM constitution shares that the purpose of the registered association is to develop and apply simulation throughout education, research and quality management in medicine and healthcare settings. The society also works to facilitate, exchange and improve upon the technology and knowledge related to healthcare simulation across Europe.
In working to achieve these goals, SESAM has established an official open access journal, named Advances in Simulation. The journal includes articles relevant to simulation that includes the study of health care practice, human factors, psychology, sociology, anthropology, communication, teamwork, human performance, education, learning technology, economics, biomedical engineering, anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, therapeutics, scientific computation, simulation modeling, population studies, theatre, craft, program evaluation and more. All articles published by Advances in Simulation are made freely and permanently accessible online immediately upon publication, without subscription charges or registration barriers.

With support through group offerings and journal insight, SESAM’s dynamic simulation community is constantly accepting new members who use simulation techniques, or who are considering doing so. The society’s website shares that, membership is open to every natural person and every legal body, and those equivalent institutions or corporations that are actively involved with the issues of simulation, or with the practical execution of simulation in the areas of education, training and research.
By joining the society, members become a part of an international group of protagonists of simulation. Members are also invited to SESAM affiliated meetings, as well as many networking opportunities. Other benefits of joining this association are Receiving mailing list emails, the ability to send six clearly identifiable corporate messages by email to the mailing list, storage of one HTML file on the SESAM server and access to the “corporate forum” on the homepage with access to all forum members. There are discount options for affiliated partners as well.
Members of this association come from a wide variety of medical and educational backgrounds within the healthcare sphere. All members possess an interest and passion in medical simulation, and the association is not affiliated with any specific medical specialty.
Membership applications must be sent to the executive committee in writing. The executive committee decides on acceptance by resolution. Corporate memberships are also welcome. Oppositely, resignations from SESAM can be effected with an informal letter to the Executive Committee. Furthermore, membership is discontinued upon death of natural persons and upon dissolution/termination of the legal body or corporation. Members can also be asked to resign from the membership when the Executive Committee determines that there is no basis for further affiliation. Such an action would require agreement from the majority of the members of SESAM.

Membership is automatically cancelled if the membership dues are not paid. As for payment, membership dues may be settled at any point during the year, with the amount of the membership dues being set by the General Assembly.
Leadership
SESAM is represented by an executive committee and the general assembly. The executive committee members consists of a president, vice president, secretary and treasurer, each of whom is solely authorized to represent SESAM. Office holders are elected for two years and can be re-elected once.
In the case of the resignation of a member of the executive committee, the other members of the executive committee are required to find a substitute. This action must be confirmed at the next General Assembly, as these members are elected by the general assembly If an executive committee member resigns membership from the SESAM society, the member automatically steps down from office in the executive committee.
The executive committee is empowered to represent SESAM for legal purposes. Tasks for a single purpose that involve more than 2000 Euros are required to first be approved by the general assembly. Additionally, resolutions made by the executive committee will only be accepted when the majority of members are in agreement. In case of a tie, the president must cast the deciding vote.
The general assembly takes place each year in conjunction with a scientific meeting or workshop. A notice of the assembly includes the agenda and is to be sent to all members in advance, at least one month prior to the event. Decisions may not be made on matters that are not part of the agenda unless they are made unanimously, and resolutions of the general assembly shall be carried by a simple majority of the members that are present.

There also exists a SESAM scientific committee which serves as a platform for contacts and the exchange of ideas and scientific initiatives and is responsible for the Scientific Programme of the SESAM Annual Meeting. This committee is comprised of 19 members: five core committee members, 12 associate members, and two short-term members. All members are required to be active members of SESAM, and should have a solid scientific background in clinical simulation. The committee mandate is a minimum of a three-year commitment, with the exception of the short-term members, who are appointed annually.
European Simulation Conferences
Each year, the Society in Europe for Simulation Applied to Medicine hosts a SESAM Simulation Meeting, with the year 2019 marking the 25th anniversary of this unique healthcare simulation conference. Each year provides an opportunity to see the latest medical simulation products from Laerdal, CAE Healthcare, Education Management Solutions, B-Line Medical, Gaumard, SIMStation and more!
The annual meeting typically offers a variety of engaging keynote lectures and state-of-the-art sessions, along with a selection of educational workshops. A medical exhibition provides another great opportunity for members to connect with exhibiting companies and see the latest products and technology. SimGHOSTS, SoFraSimS and IPSS leadership often help provide additional session content at these events.
