THIS Wednesday August 7th at 7:50AM CST the Laerdal Sponsored Keynote Session will be broadcast online and live-streamed for free to the global healthcare and technology community. This year the 3rd annual hands-on training event for IT and Healthcare Technology Professionals called “The Gathering Of Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialists”, or SimGHOSTS for short, is taking place at the San Antonio College School of Nursing. Around 165 Sim Techs and 11 Medical Simulation Technology Vendors from around the world are expected to attend!
The session will begin with an update from newly appointed non-profit organization Event Team Chair Ryan Eling with some key survey data from our emerging technical and professional community. Next, Keynote Speaker Dr. Timothy Clapper PhD in Education, will be speaking on how to empower simulation technicians in their healthcare-based programs by using TEAMSTEPPS communication methods. This presentation has been seen by technicians within our community and remarked as “ground breaking” and “powerful!”
Afterwords, SimGHOSTS will hear from individuals who wish to be considered for The Gathering of Healthcare Simulation Technology Specialist Presidential race. Those who have previously attended a SimGHOSTS event will be also be allowed to vote for this first community-elected position.
Finally, SimGHOSTS Founder and ongoing Executive Director Lance Baily will be demonstrating two new projects that have been called “Industry Game Changing” by those who have already had a sneak peak! (Lance also started HealthySimulation.com!)
All of this will be broadcast FREE THIS Wednesday August 7th at 7:50AM CST at SimGHOSTS.Org!
About the Keynote Speaker:
Timothy Clapper, PhD, is an Education and Simulation Consultant. Following a 20-year career in the US Army, Dr. Clapper taught leadership and academic success courses in both affluent and socioeconomically disadvantaged inner-city high schools. As an Education Consultant, he assisted thousands of teachers with integrating technology and differentiating instruction to the needs of their learners. As Director of Education at the Institute of Medical Simulation and Advanced Learning (iMSAL) in New York City, and Assistant Dean for Simulation and Technology at the University of Texas-Arlington, he developed and facilitated simulation-based instruction for thousands of physicians and nurses. As a Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS™) Master Trainer, he has improved the teamwork skills and clinical practice of interprofessional teams at numerous healthcare facilities. In addition, Health and Hospitals Corporation, the largest public hospital system in the U.S. with oversight of the 11 public hospitals in New York City, saw a significant reduction in clinical errors following his team-based and skill-based courses. The team-based courses that he developed for clinical teams were recognized by the Joint Commission as “best practices.” Using his unique brand of Brain-Based Learning (BBL), Dr. Clapper trained hundreds of clinical educators with moving off the teacher-centered platform to become better simulation debriefers and facilitators of learning. Dr. Clapper has authored more than 25 academic publications in advanced learning theory, retention and transfer of learning, clinical simulation, and improvement in clinical practice and teamwork. More about the Keynote Presentation
Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety (TeamSTEPPS®) is a powerful, evidenced-based teamwork and communication tool that can make a difference for patient safety. As many in the simulation community look to move beyond Kirkpatrick’s first two levels of educational assessment, the presenter, in the roles of Simulation Technology Specialist, Director of Education, Dean and Consultant, has used TeamSTEPPS to change the culture and practice of entire departments at more than 11 inner-city healthcare facilities. The Joint Commission is looking for evidence of a TeamSTEPPS improvement process with each hospital accreditation visit. Simulation technology specialists are the backbone of any simulation program and need to be empowered to lead and support a TeamSTEPPS initiative in their own simulation environment. The presenter will provide an overview of TeamSTEPPS, followed by engaging, audience-participatory, team-based clinical demonstrations, which will generate the buy-in and confidence needed to begin the TeamSTEPPS curriculum integration process.

“The new Nursing and Allied Health Complex at ACC’s San Antonio College provides state-of-the-art clinical environments and teaching labs to support this growing program. The new facility will allow the College to double its enrollment within three years from 500 to an estimated 1,000 students.
The 120,000 SF facility includes a public clinic as well as classrooms and clinical labs that emulate real-world healthcare environments. “The college is keeping pace with technological advancements that move the healthcare industry forward. We are delighted that the new facilities will expand our excellent programs to involve more students and faculty, and ultimately benefit the community,” says San Antonio College President Dr. Robert E. Zeigler.
The facility supports Dental Technician and Assistant, Medical Assistant, EMT, Medical Transcription and RN Nursing programs. Skill labs, exam rooms, nursing simulator labs, critical care labs, LDR rooms, a pediatric lab, open nurse stations and an ambulance bay module include SimMan technology, beds, and equipment used in today’s hospitals. The complex design and engineering provides full hospital simulation tied to video recording and monitoring for teacher supervision and instruction. The facility features flexible, presentation-ready classrooms; open-area student lounges; and administrative offices as well as sustainable building strategies including solar shading devices, extensive natural light and daylighting controls, regional and recycled construction materials, and water efficient landscaping.”
