Participate in Research on the Simulation Operations Needs Assessment Tool (SONAT): The Simulation Operations Needs Assessment Tool (SONAT) is in the final phase of reliability testing. The simulation research team has developed a needs assessment tool to assess Simulation Operations Staff’s baseline simulation knowledge and implementation level. The goal is the tool would be beneficial for identifying simulation onboarding needs, professional development opportunities, and encouraging continued growth of the healthcare simulation operations field.

SIM 4 SAFETY 2024 : Simulation4Safety is our third conference, following on from Simulation4Impact and Optimize Simulation. Our conference themes recognise firstly that simulation should show delivery of improvement in service-user experiences and outcomes; secondly that recent significant investment in resources should be met by faculty skilled and motivated to make optimal use of these resources to deliver; and now that safety is a key indicator and desirable outcome.Simulation4Safety shows evolution and aspiration flowing from our experiences and your feedback. Our sole keynote speaker, Dr Dawn Benson, is a sociologist who specializes in safety investigation within health, social care, and education currently works as a National Investigator at the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB).

Seeing the Problem” The Extended Reality (XR) Ophthalmology Macular Disease Simulation : The International Academy of Digital Arts & Sciences has selected Lucid Reality Labs as a winner in the 3rd Annual Anthem Awards for “Seeing the Problem: The Extended Reality (XR) Ophthalmology Macular Disease Simulation” in the Best Use of Technology category for Responsible Technology and Social Impact. Lucid Reality Labs was selected from over 2,000 global entries from 30 countries. We are delighted to be able to be recognized by the International Academy and raise visibility for XR Simulation to drive impact and support treatment for critical healthcare needs.

EdTech: Brent Gordon of Elsevier On How Their Technology Will Make An Important Positive Impact On Education : In recent years, Big Tech has gotten a bad rep. But of course, many tech companies are doing important work making monumental positive changes to society, health, and the environment. To highlight these, we started a new interview series about “Technology Making An Important Positive Social Impact”. We are interviewing leaders of tech companies who are creating or have created a tech product that is helping to make a positive change in people’s lives or the environment. In this particular installment, we are talking to leaders of Education Technology companies, who share how their tech is helping to improve our educational system. As a part of this series, I had the pleasure of interviewing Brent Gordon.

Breakthrough medical development could significantly reduce number of pregnant women having unnecessary or ineffective surgery to prevent premature births : Task trainer specialist Limbs & Things has partnered with leading obstetricians to help address inconsistencies in a common surgical procedure to prevent pre-term births. Leading premature birth specialist and Tommy’s Chair of Maternal and Fetal Health at King’s College London, Professor Andrew Shennan OBE, and NHS Fife obstetrician Dr Graham Tydeman, led a team to undertake the first ever studies of the actual surgical technique to try and improve the consistency – and therefore success – of the procedure. The first trial involved asking 28 UK consultant obstetricians to perform their normal cerclage procedure on a cervical cerclage simulator, developed by Limbs & Things, using computerised tomography (CT) imaging to measure precisely where the sutures were being placed. The simulator consists of a realistic female pelvis and vagina with a replaceable cervix, and forms part of its world-leading PROMPT Flex birthing simulator range, ensuring a standardised anatomy for each participant. The study revealed considerable variation in the height and depth of the suture, placement and tightness of the knot amongst the experienced obstetricians that took part. Anne Allin, commercial director at Limbs & Things says: “Our medical task trainers are designed in collaboration with medical professionals to ensure they address their training needs – they need to be as realistic as possible, providing the same look and feel as when performing on a real person, so the medical staff can learn, practice and become confident on products that feel like the real thing.

Intelligent Ultrasound Adds Endometriosis Module to ScanTrainer to Support Sonographer Learning and Early Diagnosis : 2nd May 2023, Cardiff, UK: Intelligent Ultrasound (IU) today announced that it has added a new module to its ScanTrainer transvaginal and transabdominal ultrasound simulation platform – endometriosis. The new module comes with two e-learn modules and 24 endometriosis cases to support sonographers in their learning and identification of the disease. The objective – to enable early diagnosis in clinical practice, leading to a faster and more appropriate referral for patients.Endometriosis is the name given to the condition where cells, similar to the ones in the lining of the womb, are found elsewhere in the body. Each month these cells react in the same way to those in the womb, building up and then breaking down and bleeding. Unlike the cells in the womb that leave the body as part of the menstrual cycle, this blood has no way to escape and can cause inflammation, pain, the formation of scar tissue (adhesions) and potential infertility.
