Using Clinical Simulation to Improve Medication Administration Safety

As part of HealthySimulation.com’s webinar platform, Kim Baily, Ph.D., MSN, RN, will be presenting a one-hour class titled “Using Clinical Simulation to Improve Medication Administration Safety” on Tuesday, June 8, at 10 a.m. PST. This intermediate-level webinar session is designed to introduce nursing educators to the use of health care simulation in order to provide an immersive learning experience for undergraduate and registered nurses to improve medication administration skills. By watching this webinar presentation, participants are able to earn one contact hour of registered nurse (RN) continuing education (CE). This webinar also marks the re-launch of the “Using Healthcare Simulation to Improve Medication Administration Safety” clinical simulation course.

Further, this presentation will outline current statistics related to medication errors and near misses as well as the causes of the errors. Medication administration standards and evidence-based practice related to medication administration will be reviewed. Literature that supports health care simulation as an effective learning modality for nursing learners transitioning from the classroom and skill checklists to the clinical setting as well as for ongoing training for registered nurses will be highlighted. Examples of health care simulation scenarios that include medication administration will also be discussed.

By the end of the webinar, the learners can expect to be able to state the extent, causes and consequences of medication errors. They will receive a review of the “Rights of Medication Administration” and instruction on how they can be taught through simulation. Additionally, participants will be given the opportunity to discuss ways to incorporate medication administration into existing clinical simulation scenarios.

More About Clinical Simulation

Clinical Simulation is a way for a Simulation Center or program to replicate real-world health care scenarios in an environment which is safe for education and experimentation. The term “Clinical Simulation” can be broadly defined as the use of tools, devices and/or environments to mimic a particular aspect of clinical care. Other more common terms for the phrase include Health Care Simulation, Medical Simulation, Nursing Simulation, Simulation in Health Care and Surgical Simulation.

There are a number of advantages to utilizing clinical simulation-based learning. For example, through Clinical Simulation experiences, learners are able to challenge themselves to properly treat real-life clinical scenarios while essentially receiving in-classroom instruction. Additionally, such a wide range of easily accessible learning opportunities provides the freedom to make mistakes and learn from them. The clinically simulated learning environment is also readily available and customizable, adding to the tool’s usefulness in clinics.

While oral exams, written tests and assigned readings are traditional methods of secondary education, Clinical Simulation uses technological advances to provide an accurate simulation for first-hand learning. This presents students or health care professionals the opportunity to learn from hands-on experiences without putting actual patients at risk.

More About Dr. Kim Baily

Dr. Kim Baily, MSN, Ph.D., RN, has had a passion for health care simulation since she pulled her first sim man out of the closet and into the light in 2002. She has been a full-time educator and director of nursing and was responsible for building and implementing two simulation programs at El Camino College and Pasadena City College in Southern California. Dr. Baily is a member of both INACSL and SSIH. She serves as a consultant for emerging simulation programs and has previously chaired Southern California Simulation Collaborative, which supports health care professionals working in simulation in both hospitals and academic institutions throughout Southern California.

Dr. Baily has taught a variety of nursing and simulation-related courses in a variety of forums, such as on-site simulation debriefing workshops and online courses. Since retiring from full time teaching, she has written over 100 health care simulation educational articles for HealthySimulation.com. These articles cover many topics related to simulation, including debriefing methods, job descriptions, simulation lab administration, introductory physiology for non-medical sim team members and tips for building a successful simulation program. Many of the articles include templates and hints and are all downloadable for free.

More About the “Using Healthcare Simulation to Improve Medication Administration Safety” Course

According to the National Institute of Health, 1.5 million people are harmed by medication errors every year in the United States with an estimated 8000 people dying from those errors and at an estimated cost of $3.5 billion. This course will explore the causes of medication errors and will outline current national standards of best practice for medication administration such as those issued by The Joint Commission and those included in the National Patient Safety Goals. Learners will have the opportunity to identify medication errors within their own home clinical or academic institutions and to identify how these are reported and responded to.

Following the standards of the International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) and lessons from Translational Science, simulation-based education will be introduced as a method for mitigating practice gaps in medication administration. Learners will apply these guidelines to create detailed simulation scenarios based on the nursing process and other current best practice guidelines.

Two detailed scenarios with supporting documents are offered as part of the course. The course consistently focuses on how simulation can identify practice gaps and improve patient safety. Emphasis is given to the role that simulation plays in risk management and patient safety systems within hospitals and academic settings rather being limited to a simple role as an educational strategy.
