About the APSA Sim Workshops
Alisha Fisher, Founder and Director of APSA, shared with HealthySim that this series aims to bring you Simulation Experts from around the world and around the nation to share practical knowledge and address emerging needs in Modelling and Simulation in response to training and development. The content has been developed together with Dr Teresa Crea from the University of Canberra, and Dr Saikou Diallo from Virginia Modeling, Analysis and Simulation Centre.
Using real world case studies, and facilitated by experienced practitioners, the program is designed to address both individual and organisational challenges through the presentation of best practice theory, methods and tools.
Their aim is to build a critical mass of people within government and business with the knowledge and skills to enable them to drive sustainable change and improvement in managing complex environments. This multidisciplinary program is for early to mid-level professionals with an interest in the field of simulation and immersive environments, and to meet strong workforce demands from the Asia Pacific region and Australia. There is the opportunity to deliver these Advanced Master Classes in-person within the Asia Pacific region.

FOUNDATIONS: SYSTEMS THEORY
Monday 24 July – Friday 28 July 2017
This Advanced Master Class provides an introduction to complex problem solving through system thinking and Modelling and Simulation. The unit provides an introduction to systems theory and its basic principles. Participants will learn the basics of systems thinking, systems design and architecture frameworks and system modelling paradigms. Participants will also receive hands on training in how to model, simulate and analyse complex systems using top down and bottom-up approaches to modelling systems. In particular, the unit will cover the basic paradigms of Modelling and Simulation including Agent-based Modelling, System Dynamics and Discrete Event Simulation. Throughout the week, participants will develop, build and implement a series of models in different simulation languages and learn how to use the most appropriate paradigm for their problem.
SIMULATION MANAGEMENT: SYSTEMS AND PEOPLE – PART A
Wednesday 20 September – Thursday 21 September 2017
This Advanced Master Class provides an overview of the organisational, business, systems and people requirements in the development, procurement and management of a simulation operation and lifecycle. Participants will learn knowledge to make better and more informed decisions as managers and operational leads. This unit takes a holistic approach by focussing on the needs and cost benefit analysis for procurement including determining capability requirements, resource allocation, assessing budget and financial risk. Participants will learn how to develop a simulation business proposal and gain an insight into contracting, governance and compliance requirements. The unit will focus on the human dimensions of project and people management, including stakeholder relationships, monitoring performance and deliverables, risk and task management, establishing teams, workplace culture and protocols.
SIMULATION AS INNOVATION AND EXPERIMENTATION – PART A
Tuesday 12 December – Thursday 14 December 2017
This Advanced Master Class develops an understanding on the role of simulation in supporting innovation and experimentation. This unit will cover the use of simulation for brainstorming, rapid prototyping and problem-solving, in conjunction with the impact of next generation technologies on the diverse simulation modalities and applications. Participants will be given an overview of the innovation cycle from ideation to commercialisation. Participants will be become conversant with creative thinking, brainstorming and facilitation techniques such as design thinking to encourage lateral and creative approaches to the problem space. They will investigate approaches to experimental research design together with how and where simulation can be utilised to test or model outcomes. This will take place alongside industry briefings and site visits to give participants direct experience of emerging platforms and next generation technologies. This unit will include an understanding on the history and background of popular emerging technologies such as AI , VR, AR, MR and some of their inherent challenges.
ANALYSIS FOR MODELLING AND SIMULATION
Monday 15 January – Friday 19 January 2018
This Advanced Master Class provides an introduction to design of experiments, statistics for simulation including qualitative and quantitative analysis. Participants will be provided with techniques for standards, verification and validation.
SIMULATION PEDAGOGY AND EDUCATION – PART A
Tuesday 6 February – Thursday 8 February 2018
This Advanced Master Class provides an introduction to instructional strategies for experiential and simulation based learning processes. Participants will learn how to comprehend the essentials of simulation as a learning technology. This unit focusses on the differences and distinctive requirements for teacher-learner transactions in simulated and action based learning modalities. It will highlight implementation strategies, assessment methods, in addition to the function of feedback, reflection, debriefing, and evaluation. Special consideration is also given to adult workforce training needs together with criteria for establishing goals in personalised or team learning situations, including online, virtual, live and/or blended.
