New Video Promotes the Need to Make Health Care as Safe as Flying

A new short video has been created by the National Patient Safety Board Advocacy Coalition to emphasize the role that action at the federal level can improve safety across health care. This 30-second video contrasts the safety we feel when embarking on a flight—thanks in large part to the work of the National Transportation Safety Board—with the potential for preventable medical harms when we seek health care. At the end of 2022, Rep. Nanette Barragán (D-CA) introduced bill H.R.9377 – The National Patient Safety Board Act, legislation to establish a National Patient Safety Board (NPSB), a nonpunitive, collaborative, independent home to address safety in healthcare. Simulab Releases New Breast Tissue Accessory

SimX Awarded U.S. Space Force Contract

SimX was awarded a multi-year $1.7M contract by the U.S. Space Force to develop virtual reality training simulations that will help prepare Pararescuemen, Combat Rescue Officers, and flight surgeons to treat medical conditions in space and during astronaut recovery. According to a company press release, the initial $1.7M program commitment will focus on adapting the existing SimX Virtual Reality Medical Simulation System (VRMSS) to include space-specific components as well as unique medical scenarios outlined by the existing Pre-Hospital Space Medicine Care Course (PHSMCC).

AAGL Appoints Inovus Medical as Exclusive Equipment Partner for EMIGS National Training and Testing Program

Inovus Medical has been appointed as an exclusive partner by the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists (AAGL) for the manufacturing and delivery of the equipment for the Essentials in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (EMIGS) program. The partnership was announced during the Business Meeting at the 51st Global Congress on MIGS held at Gaylord Rockies Resort and Convention Center in Colorado. According to Nash S. The Praxis Center has welcomed Phillip Wortham MBA, BA, CHSOS-A as its inaugural Chief Clinical Simulation Officer. The Praxis Center is the nation’s first dedicated healthcare simulation training center focused specifically on the needs of rural healthcare practitioners. The Center was founded to transform rural healthcare education through innovation, technology, applied practice, and advanced training methodologies. Before joining Praxis, Phillip was the Director of Operations and Technology (COO) at the Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation (CAMLS) located in Tampa, Florida.

IHS Campus Receives $1.14 Million to Improve Simulation Lab and Health Training

According to Seton Hall, the university’s Interprofessional Health Sciences campus – home to the School of Health and Medical Sciences and College of Nursing – will receive a major boost through federal funding secured by Congressman Bill Pascrell (NJ-9) and Senators Robert Menendez and Cory Booker. These investments will help ensure IHS learners receive “as modern and authentic an experience as possible.” Additionally, the project will provide new equipment and upgrades to the Simulation Center on the IHS campus.

2023 INACSL Research Fellowship Accepting Applications

The INACSL Research Fellowship is a twelve-month program designed to develop future leaders in simulation research. This unique, web-based fellowship is comprised of monthly webinars with experts, extensive reading, and writing, with guidance on the best practices and processes of conducting simulation research. Fellows work on a research project, grant application, or research manuscript during the twelve-month period and are assigned an experienced mentor to guide them during the development of their project.

VirtaMed and CICE to Announce Partnership for Gynecological Endoscopy Certification

The CICE (International Center for Endoscopic Surgery) in Clermont-Ferrand, France, an internationally renowned endoscopic training center and the first in Europe to implement the European certification (GESEA), has inaugurated a training room using VirtaMed LaparoS Gynecological Laparoscopy and GynoS Hysteroscopy simulators. CICE and VirtaMed will partner to integrate the VirtaMed mixed-reality simulators into the CICE training program, developing a comprehensive training approach with the goal to include more advanced and measurable surgical cases to improve the quality of training and the skills transfer to the operating room.

Intro to the SimX Virtual Manikin Series

This video showcases the first case in our Virtual Manikin Series; The Chest Pain Virtual Manikin Case. These cases are designed to replicate what you typically do with high-fidelity sim Manikins, however, learners can now practice in an immersive virtual environment and with a true-to-life virtual patient. Facilitators will have complete control over patient dialog, animations, vital signs, lab/imaging/and exam results. In other words, the patient can have any diagnosis and require any treatment depending on the moderator’s choices.

Virtual Reality Helps Students Experience Healthcare Scenarios

According to EdTech reporter Wylie Wong, Augusta University’s College of Nursing realized the school needed to better train learners on how to support family members when patients are near the end of life after recent graduates told faculty how emotionally unprepared they were the first time they faced the situation. He reports that, in response, Lynsey Steinberg, a board-certified medical illustrator with Augusta University’s Center for Instructional Innovation, said the Georgia university has built virtual reality simulations that enable nursing learners to role-play various situations so they can learn empathy and provide support their future patients and patients’ families will need.
