A new short video has been created by the National Patient Safety Board Advocacy Coalition to emphasize the role that action at the federal level can improve safety across health care. This 30-second video contrasts the safety we feel when embarking on a flight—thanks in large part to the work of the National Transportation Safety Board—with the potential for preventable medical harms when we seek health care. At the end of 2022, Rep. Nanette Barragán (D-CA) introduced bill H.R.9377 – The National Patient Safety Board Act, legislation to establish a National Patient Safety Board (NPSB), a nonpunitive, collaborative, independent home to address safety in healthcare. HealthySimulation.com encourages all readers to email their legislator today to express their support.
The Breast Tissue Accessory is designed to be used as an overlay to enhance training on the TraumaMan System, a standardized patient, or any patient simulator in the supine position. The breast tissue’s symmetrical design and soft, life-like material allow educators to train repositioning during chest tube insertions on TraumaMan for a realistic training experience. The product simulates standalone breasts approximately the size of a 40D ~38DD cup.
SimX was awarded a multi-year $1.7M contract by the U.S. Space Force to develop virtual reality training simulations that will help prepare Pararescuemen, Combat Rescue Officers, and flight surgeons to treat medical conditions in space and during astronaut recovery. According to a company press release, the initial $1.7M program commitment will focus on adapting the existing SimX Virtual Reality Medical Simulation System (VRMSS) to include space-specific components as well as unique medical scenarios outlined by the existing Pre-Hospital Space Medicine Care Course (PHSMCC).

This video showcases the first case in our Virtual Manikin Series; The Chest Pain Virtual Manikin Case. These cases are designed to replicate what you typically do with high-fidelity sim Manikins, however, learners can now practice in an immersive virtual environment and with a true-to-life virtual patient. Facilitators will have complete control over patient dialog, animations, vital signs, lab/imaging/and exam results. In other words, the patient can have any diagnosis and require any treatment depending on the moderator’s choices.
According to EdTech reporter Wylie Wong, Augusta University’s College of Nursing realized the school needed to better train learners on how to support family members when patients are near the end of life after recent graduates told faculty how emotionally unprepared they were the first time they faced the situation. He reports that, in response, Lynsey Steinberg, a board-certified medical illustrator with Augusta University’s Center for Instructional Innovation, said the Georgia university has built virtual reality simulations that enable nursing learners to role-play various situations so they can learn empathy and provide support their future patients and patients’ families will need.
