How Lucid Reality Labs Supports Medical Device Manufacturers with VR Training Tools

Virtual reality has become an important element of healthcare simulation education and training. As VR technologies continue to advance, an increasing number of tools are becoming readily available and easily accessible to both educators and learners. To help take VR simulation to the next level, the immersive technology consulting, design, and development company Lucid Reality Labs (LRL) has focused efforts on creating unique interactive augmented, virtual, and mixed reality experiences for healthcare, MedTech, pharma, and education. This HealthySimulation.com article details how LRL’s virtual reality simulation tools help support medical device manufacturers.

Ultimately, the Lucid Reality Labs platform, which was founded in 2016, believes that immersive technologies can contribute to the improvement of the life quality for people around the globe. That’s why the LRL mission is to create immersive solutions with a positive impact, by going the extra mile, focusing on team synergy, client collaborations, and deep tech expertise. The vision is then to contribute to the creation of a new reality, which will enhance the well-being of individuals worldwide.

Thus, the company combines virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality, intelligent technology solutions, and research and development solutions to create innovative solutions applicable across the industry. Specifically, the VR solutions encompass elements of gamification for training, education, and collaboration scenarios. By doing so, users can explore, interact, learn and build skills as well as master procedures attached to each role in a risk-free, controlled environment.

Further, the company enhances the real-world environment with digital twins and visual overlays that enables countless possibilities for business across all industries. The AR solutions thereby transform the way people perceive information, play, learn, collaborate, shop, socialize, and explore the world. Next, MR solutions merge the physical and digital worlds, people, and virtual beings, revealing new opportunities for human, computer, and environment interactions. LRL creates new forms of remote collaboration, operations improvement, reskilling, and upskilling of the workforce while promoting added patient safety and creativity.

As for intelligent technology solutions, Lucid Reality Labs works to deliver unique solutions that combine machine learning, smart robotics, artificial intelligence, and computer vision (algorithm technology) that enable robots to learn from humans. The technology solutions can perform required tasks precisely, autonomously, and without human interaction as well. LRL challenges existing approaches and creates innovative know-how. The company additionally works to advise, design, and implement solutions that all enable private and public-sector clients to explore and utilize spatial computing opportunities for their business, prototyping new and transforming existing products.

Lucid Reality Labs Portfolio Examples

Medical VR Intubation Simulation Project: Medtronic McGRATH MAC VR Intubation Simulation is an interactive and immersive VR intubation simulation experience created with Medtronic to demonstrate the product and to train practitioners and medical students. The solution presents the usage of the McGRATH MAC video laryngoscope as the standard of care by educating participants on how to perform an intubation procedure with a variety of patients and the complexity of intubation scenarios. The immersive VR simulation provides a great opportunity for medical specialists and learners to enhance their skills and get new experiences in a realistic and fun way.

This solution also provides an opportunity to train remotely and safely with maximum impact. The McGRATH MAC VR Intubation Simulation submerges users into a 3-dimensional operating room (OR) including equipment and sounds. The VR experience blurs the boundaries of the tactile barrier allowing users of any age to fully immerse into the experience within two minutes, as one steps into the OR to experience being in the OR and have the exact sensation of a real intubation process.

Solution: Medtronic McGRATH MAC VR simulation provides an opportunity for OR/ICU medical specialists to remotely train, get evaluated on the performed procedures while maximizing the safety and success rate of the intubation in real-time. The VR solution allows demonstrating an optimized standard of care intubation procedure, minimizing technical difficulties and risks while practicing the procedures on a virtual patient in a safe and immersive environment.

VR Hysteroscopy Multiplayer Simulation Project: The goal of the project was to build a fully immersive VR solution that could replace traditional large-scale electronic PC-based simulators. The solution would ideally also be easily used at an exhibition or conference for a precise product and procedure demonstration with maximum realism for the user. The core of this solution lies within the “7 degrees of freedom” 1-to-1 visual and tactile replica of seven moving parts controlled by the doctor during the actual procedure. The VR solution allowed for faster data transfer and update, system and demonstration effectiveness, as well as the post-procedure feeling of accomplishment triggered by tactile memory, and precise hands-on and fully immersive experience.

Solution: This solution helped to increase event interactions with the product in VR simulation by 90% due to the reduced complexity of the procedure and a new approach in mechanics, enabling the simulation to:

  • Bring forth maximum realism through a detailed and precise reaction of anatomy, hysteroscopy, and fully functional fluid management systems.
  • Fully recreate the tool mechanism starting from the source of light, camera, a spinning blade that chips off the pieces of pathological tissue, fluid management suction system ensuring the fluid circulation of saline solution.
  • Have double-handed handling, with a foot-operated switch and a camera capture of the picture instantly visualized onto the monitor in real-time.
  • Be used safely and accurately for training and educational purposes, as well as marketing and promo activities.
  • Be suitable for live simulation multiplayer to accurately represent the real procedure involving teamwork, with the possibility to perform required actions remotely.
  • A remote live multiplayer simulation, allowing an external specialist to supervise, advise, oversee and learn in an immersive OR environment in real-time.

Instrumentation Laboratory HemoCell in VR Project: The objective of the project was to create a VR environment constructor where the client could create 1-to-1 virtual visualizations of the future laboratory according to their customer’s requirements. The virtual space would allow customers to first-hand visit and observe the future laboratory with pre-installed equipment.

Solution: The developed solution, created for Oculus Quest 2 in order to ensure a smooth user experience, consisted of two stages – the editor and the VR experience. In the editor the client can create the full visual of the future laboratory based on the customer’s requirements, defining range and parameters as well as selecting required equipment. Part of the equipment was created by the developers’ team, the other part was. One part of the initial equipment was created by the in-house developers, the other integrated using CAD models, processing, and preparation for the real-time 3d rendering in a portable VR headset. The second stage generates the VR laboratory based on the editor-created plan. The created VR laboratory allows users to experience and walk-through a 1-to-1 recreated VR laboratory in a fully immersive manner.
