Abstract:
Simulation has been recognized as an important educational tool for the healthcare workforce. The role of simulation as a tool specific to patient safety is emerging and requires re-thinking the paradigm of the overall focus, implementation goals and integration into the healthcare system. Reviewing the goals of simulation, conducting near real-time needs analysis, and the establishment of meaningful ongoing relationships with healthcare system leaders is necessary for achieving highly effective goals as related to simulation as a patient safety tool. Such relationships can ultimately lead to data to assist in an evidence-based approach to a systematic integration of simulation into the healthcare system.
Learning Objectives:
- Compare the use of simulation as primarily an education tool versus that of a patient safety tool.
- Understand the role of aligning healthcare simulation as a patient safety tool to the organization that serves as the sponsor.
- Understanding the return on investment when using clinical simulation as a patient safety tool.
