Beyond the Simulation Lab: Designing Immersive Virtual Reality Simulations

The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the importance of providing simulation-based experiences in a virtual environment. By utilizing immersive VR, simulation operations specialists and educators can extend experiential learning beyond the simulation lab. This workshop will discuss how the operations specialist and educator can collaborate in designing immersive VR simulations. Using the innovative UbiSim Editor, participants will learn the process of designing an engaging experience for the immersive virtual environment.

Maria D’Errico, DNP, APRN, FNP-BC, CHSE is a Nurse Educator at UbiSim. In this role she designs and develops immersive, virtual reality simulations for nursing students. Dr. D’Errico enjoys mentoring faculty in simulation best practices, scenario design, and the integration of virtual reality into nursing curriculum. Dr. D’Errico is also simulation faculty at a local nursing program, where she facilitates and debriefs high-fidelity simulation-based experiences for baccalaureate nursing students. Dr. D’Errico’s clinical expertise is in community health and the care of medically underserved patients. She is a volunteer nurse practitioner at a Las Vegas clinic for uninsured patients and has published research focused on HPV vaccination in the college population.
