Abstract:

Variability in Prebrief communications is an identified gap that impacts the simulation experience. Currently, endorsed simulation centers deliver Prebriefings that adhere to INACSL Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (HSSOBP) objectives, but the communication delivery is not consistently standardized. Delivery and communication may differ related to multiple human factors (i.e. visual, audible, body language). The desired outcome or achievable state is the creation of awareness for endorsed simulation centers to consistently deliver Prebriefing in a standardized format that addresses these human factors and facilitates clear communication and consistent simulation experiences for all learners.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify the benefits of standardized Prebriefing for learners, facilitators, and simulationists
  2. Discuss current Prebriefing practices at simulation centers and how to increase efficiency in simulation design and facilitation.
  3. Increase knowledge and use of generative AI for creation of voice enhanced Prebriefings.

Meet the Presenter(s):

Lori Ann Camperlengo MSN, RN-BC, CHSE, CPHIMS
Clinical Assistant Professor at CONHI/Smart Hospital-UT Arlington

Lori Camperlengo has been a Clinical Assistant Professor at UTA’s CONHI Smart Hospital since 2021, working as the Lead Educator for the Medical Surgical Junior 2 simulation experiences. Lori worked as a Certified Epic Informaticist after graduating from Texas Tech Health Sciences Center with the first cohort of MSN-prepared Nursing Informaticists in 2015. Her Capstone projects “Use of Electronic Health Record During Simulation in Undergraduate Nursing Education” and “The Examination of Human Factors Impacting Transition to EHR Access in Academic Nursing Simulation Environment” demonstrated her early interest in finding solutions to better prepare students by merging simulation and informatics knowledge. Lori’s nursing background includes pediatric cardiology, neuro-muscular clinical trials at UTSouthwestern Medical Center, Institutional Review Board administration, case management, pediatric clinical research trials, and bedside nursing at Cook Children. Her initial exposure to nursing simulation “accidentally” happened as she became the “fix it” person for IV arm Haptic devices at a nursing school where she worked in the Continuing Education office, and she has been involved in simulation and education ever since. After several years in the IT world and one Big Bang Implementation, Lori returned to simulation at the University of Texas at Arlington, her alma mater and simulation home. Lori is a board-certified Informatics nurse, HIMSS certified, and a certified health simulation educator. Lori recently co-presented with an esteemed group of simulationists and pioneers in Informatics education at the 2024 International Nursing Association of Clinical Learning in Simulation conference on their work with academic EHR integration in simulation and the Competency Assessment in Simulation Evaluation tool.

Kyle Martin
Simulation Technology Specialist at CONHI/Smart Hospital-UT Arlington

From 2012-2018, Kyle served as an Avionics Technician for rotary-wing and fixed-wing aircraft in the U.S. Marine Corps. After completing his CompTIA A+ Security + and a 2000+ hour Department of Justice (DOJ) Computer Operator Apprenticeship certifications, he began working for UT System in 2019 at the regional datacenter in Ft. Worth, Texas, and attending UTA using the G.I. Bill. In Dec 2022, he received his B.S. in University Studies from UTA and began working as the Simulation Technology Specialist for UTA since February 2023.
