Medication errors including administration errors are more common world wide than many healthcare professionals and the general population may realize.  In fact, the FDA reports that there are over 1.25 million medication errors annually in the United States alone, which the NIH suggests harms over 1.5 million people every year with 8,000 patients dying annually. The average hospitalized patient experiences at least one medication error each day and the WHO reports that the total cost of looking after patients with medication-associated errors exceeds $40 billion each year. As such, ongoing healthcare education should seek to eliminate these errors by providing opportunities for clinical staff to practice and apply knowledge.

This free webinar is designed to introduce healthcare educators to the use of healthcare simulation in order to provide an immersive learning experience for undergraduate and registered nurses to improve medication administration skills. The class will outline current statistics related to medication errors and near misses as well as the causes of the errors. Medication administration standards and evidence based practice related to medication administration will be reviewed. Literature that supports simulation as an effective learning modality for nursing students transitioning from the classroom and skills check offs to the clinical setting and for ongoing training for registered nurses will be highlighted. About the Speaker Dr. Baily

Dr. Kim Baily, MSN, PhD, RN has had a passion for healthcare simulation since she pulled her first sim man out of the closet and into the light in 2002. She has been a full-time educator and director of nursing and was responsible for building and implementing two simulation programs at El Camino College and Pasadena City College in Southern California. Dr. Baily is a member of both INACSL and SSIH.

She serves as a consultant for emerging simulation programs and has previously chaired Southern California Simulation Collaborative, which supports healthcare professionals working in simulation in both hospitals and academic institutions throughout Southern California. Dr. Baily has taught a variety of nursing and simulation-related courses in a variety of forums, such as on-site simulation debriefing workshops and online courses. Since retiring from full time teaching, she has written over 100 healthcare simulation educational articles for Healthysimulation.com.
