Open Access Recorded Webinar: Using Clinical Simulation to Improve Medication Administration Safety

Today at 1PM EDT, 10AM PDT, Dr. Kim Baily, PhD, MSN, RN will be presenting an open access (free) webinar on “Using Clinical Simulation to Improve Medication Administration Safety”. Due to the number of medical errors caused by medication administration which lead to patient harm and patient deaths each year, as well as the overwhelmingly high consequential costs, it is highly recommended that healthcare simulation champions specifically focus some simulation scenario experiences on the med admin skill set. Watch the presentation here today by visiting the course registration page here. See below for a special limited time offer to join Dr. Baily for a new 4-hour course next month — but hurry, the special offer expires soon!

Special Follow Up Opportunity: A New 4 Hour Course Just Announced!

Those who participate in this open access event will be provided a special limited-time offer with additional learning opportunities for medication administration in medical simulation. Next month, Dr. Kim Baily is providing a 4-hour course workshop expounding today’s webinar on “Using Healthcare Simulation to Improve Medication Administration Safety”, covering these learning objectives:

Sponsored Content:

  • State the extent, causes and consequences of medication errors.
  • Identify National Standards related to safe medication administration.
  • List the benefits of using simulation to improve medication administration safety.
  • Discuss common pharmacological principles that affect medication administration.
  • Identify common medication administration routes and their benefits and risks.
  • Explain the “Rights of Medication Administration” and how they can be taught through simulation.

About the Webinar Recording

Medication errors including administration errors are more common world wide than many healthcare professionals and the general population may realize.  In fact, the FDA reports that there are over 1.25 million medication errors annually in the United States alone, which the NIH suggests harms over 1.5 million people every year with 8,000 patients dying annually. The average hospitalized patient experiences at least one medication error each day and the WHO reports that the total cost of looking after patients with medication-associated errors exceeds $40 billion each year. As such, ongoing healthcare education should seek to eliminate these errors by providing opportunities for clinical staff to practice and apply knowledge.

This free webinar is designed to introduce healthcare educators to the use of healthcare simulation in order to provide an immersive learning experience for undergraduate and registered nurses to improve medication administration skills. The class will outline current statistics related to medication errors and near misses as well as the causes of the errors. Medication administration standards and evidence based practice related to medication administration will be reviewed. Literature that supports simulation as an effective learning modality for nursing students transitioning from the classroom and skills check offs to the clinical setting and for ongoing training for registered nurses will be highlighted. Examples of healthcare simulation scenarios that include medication administration will also be discussed.

By the end of the webinar, the learner will be able to:

  1. State the extent, causes and consequences of medication errors.
  2. Explain the “Rights of Medication Administration” and how they can be taught through simulation.
  3. Discuss ways to incorporate medication administration into existing clinical simulation scenarios.
