Abstract:
The HomeGrown Solution (HGS) Initiative, co-sponsored by educators of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) and the National League of Nursing (NLN), is a solution-based website readily available to simulation educators, simulationists, and simulation operation specialists. The primary focus is to become familiar with self-made simulation enhancements, creative adaptations to existing items, and ideas adding to the suspension of disbelief in simulation. Initiated in 2007, Megan Meccariello presented a low-cost solution to an INACSL audience. Her passion for seeking solutions lives on, and since 2014, the partnership between INACSL and NLN has cultivated over 80 simulation solutions to enhance fidelity and keep costs down.
HGS became a viable resource for recognizing strategies to use outdated manikins. Task trainers can be used beyond the warranty, enhancing realism in the simulation-based learning environment. Older manikins, task trainers, essential pantry items, and moulage can be used to develop low-cost solutions. This webinar aims to increase awareness, reduce hesitancy in submitting solutions, and create a strong network of resources for simulationists and simulation operations specialists. The overarching goal is to increase awareness, promote creativity, and build a more robust network of resources.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify how to access and submit a HomeGrown Solution to the NLN library.
- Describe how to incorporate HomeGrown Solutions to enhance the realism of nursing simulation or healthcare simulation scenarios.
- Identify one HomeGrown Solution that could be implemented within the attendee’s simulation center or lab, which can improve clinical education and training outcomes.
