Abstract:

This CE webinar will present the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) essentials program and how nursing simulation can be part of your solution to meet the requirements for the essentials in your program. The presenters will highlight the opportunities educators have in creating immersion experiences that integrate previous learning and demonstrate competencies in a more complex situation. Healthcare Simulation for nursing is a tool to help students and programs measure core competencies as identified by the AACN. Examples of successes and potential challenges will also be presented.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the evolution of nursing as a discipline and various aspects of the profession that serve as a framework to inform nursing education across the educational trajectory.
  2. Identify simulation strategies used to measure some of the competencies or sub competencies for professional nursing practice across the life span and with diverse populations.
  3. Describe how to construct a simulation activity within the four spheres of care identified by the AACN.

Meet the Presenter(s):

Ruth Everett-Thomas PhD, RN, CHSE
Associate Dean for Simulation Programs at University of Miami

Dr. Everett-Thomas’ research focuses on simulation training to improve patient and health care worker safety. She has authored and co-authored many publications using simulation as a teaching and training modality for students and health care workers. Dr. Everett-Thomas has worked on and with interdisciplinary teams and continues to seek interprofessional collaborations for team training and education. Currently, Dr. Everett-Thomas is building a foundation to enhance the clinical portion of the nursing curriculum with simulation to address student competencies. She is also working with the university’s technology department to improve student use/competency with medical records and medical devices that are relevant to nursing.
