Virteasy Dental Announces First Next-Gen Haptic Dental Simulator Built On Unreal Engine

Virteasy Dental Announces First Next-Gen Haptic Dental Simulator Built On Unreal Engine

Back in late 2019, Epic Games (makers of Fortnite) announced that they had given a MegaGrant to Virteasy Dental to bring the power of the Unreal Engine to dental simulation to benefit universities across the world. The thinking was that this would improve the clinical simulation software on the Virteasy dental simulator. The company has recently shared that this will also be complemented by the launch of a brand new healthcare simulator to take advantage of the power of Unreal Engine and the ability to add virtual reality to learners’ experiences.

This Virteasy Dental (by HRV Simulation) announcement includes the launch of Virteasy V2 and VR, which have been rebuilt on the Unreal Engine. This is the first official instance of integration of 3D Systems‘ haptic devices and the first Next-Gen dental training simulator to be built on Unreal Engine.

The unveiling is at IDS Cologne, in partnership with 3D Systems. The official launch will be on December 11, 2021, with the first installations from pre-orders already planned in Italy and in Pakistan. With the University of Sheffield as a development partner, Virteasy Dental trains learners for real-world procedures before patients even sit in the chair. Mixing interactive simulations, and powered by Unreal Engine with the use of a haptic arm, learners are able to not only replicate but simulate through feeling what working on teeth is like.

“Thanks to the MegaGrant from Epic Games we are able to take the power of the Unreal Engine and take Virteasy Dental and dental training to the next level,” James Markey, head of sales/product at HRV Simulation said.

Some of those improvements include being able to improve graphics with dynamic lighting and shadows for a better sense of position within the simulation. They will also help integrate a brand new virtual patient with interactions and animations to make them more lifelike, and add a full-VR mode that allows the use of the Oculus Quest headset. Further, with the improvements comes the ability to start testing new features and functionalities with universities: simulation of blood and hand-tracking.

These improvements will see a worldwide impact when HRV Simulation updates the company’s existing simulator base in early 2022 with the new simulation, once tested by early adopters. Adopters are expected from over 20 countries, over 40 universities and over 115 simulators.

Virteasy Dental Products

Virteasy Dental V2 – Classic: Virteasy Dental V2 is a redesigned simulator that introduces a new, innovative, modular, design for modern dental training. A natural evolution from V1, the new simulator features more compact high-resolution monitors for both navigation and surgery.

Virteasy Dental V2 in VR: The first haptic dental training simulator in the world to offer full VR with the Oculus Quest headset, the product offers a totally new immersive experience that students have loved. This also opens up the door to remote training for non-haptic training from home and larger simulation suites on more of a budget.
