Bio | Ron has been fully immersed in clinical simulation since 2011. Over a twenty-six-year healthcare career, Ron has gained extensive technical knowledge and considerable medical experience. Through his understanding of adult learning theories and various simulation modalities, Ron has assisted in educating healthcare professionals at multiple levels to improve patient outcomes. Born and raised in Berkley, Michigan, Ron spent summers with his grandparents on Bois Blanc Island in the Straits of Mackinac. He graduated from Berkley High School in May 1998 before attending Oakland Community College, where he completed an Associate in Liberal Arts in 2003. After college, Ron took time away from his academic studies to start his family, with the birth of his daughter, Megan. Two years later, he welcomed his son, Benjamin. After several years, Ron transferred to Oakland University, graduating in April 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication. While continuing his studies, Ron joined Beaumont Hospital (now Corewell Health) in September 1999, where he held various roles within the healthcare organization. In 2005, he joined the operating rooms of Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, and Plastic Surgery as a Technical Support Assistant. In 2011, Ron transitioned to a role as a Clinical Simulation Educator and completed the Clinical Simulation Certificate Program at the University of Southern Indiana in 2012. In January 2015, Ron obtained certification as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), becoming one of the first twenty-one worldwide to achieve this specialization. He also completed Emergency Medical Technician (EMT-B) training at Oakland Community College in December 2015. Recognized for his EMT skills by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, Ron began working part-time with a local EMS agency, serving his hometown communities. Additionally, he serves as an Emergency Medical Dispatcher and a member of the Special Pathogens Response Team. Always striving for growth, Ron continued to advance his education, earning a Master of Arts in Applied Communication from the University of Michigan-Flint in the summer of 2020. In March 2021, Ron further cemented his dedication to healthcare simulation by becoming one of the first twenty-five globally certified as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist-Advanced (CHSOS-A). Subsequently, he earned his certification as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) from SSH in March 2022. In January 2017, Ron transitioned from his role at Beaumont Hospital to the academic side of simulation. He served as the Simulation Specialist/Coordinator – Instructional Learning Lead for the School of Nursing at the University of Michigan-Flint. Alongside his full-time role, Ron also serves as an Adjunct Lecturer, teaching in the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Simulation program. His courses include HCS 501: Introduction to Healthcare Simulation and HCS 503: Strategies to Improve Fidelity in Healthcare Simulation. These roles have allowed Ron to mentor new Healthcare Simulationists, fueling his passion for the field. In February 2025, Ron left his full-time academic role at the University of Michigan-Flint and joined Trinity Health Oakland Hospital (formerly Saint Joseph Mercy Oakland) as the Simulation Coordinator within the Simulation Center. Now back in a hospital-based Simulationist role, Ron continues his work, assisting in educating healthcare professionals to enhance patient safety through high-quality, high-fidelity structured simulations. |
