The Canadian Alliance of Nurse Educators Using SImulation (CAN-Sim) 2025 conference will occur May 4 – 6, 2025, at the British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. In alignment with CAN-Sim’s vision of excellence in simulation education and research through networking, the 2025 CAN-Sim Conference theme is “Empowering Nursing Simulation Educators Through Collaboration, Innovation, Scholarship and Mentorship.” The conference program will address the learning needs of nursing simulation educators from novice to expert, from academic, hospital and community-based settings, the use of any clinical simulation modality with a range from low-fidelity to high-fidelity and includes simulated patient simulation, virtual simulation, and virtual/augmented reality simulation. This HealthySimulation.com article will provide an overview of the upcoming CAN-Sim Conference and important dates.
Abstracts Submission is Now Open
The CAN-Sim 2025 Conference will be the FIRST Biennial Conference! Come and be part of this historical event. The CAN-Sim Conference Planning Committee anticipates 200+ simulation educators to attend this conference from across Canada and internationally.
Abstract submissions opened at the end of October 2024 and are due by December 6, 2024, at 11:59 PM EST. Abstract submissions include oral and poster presentations, workshops and panel presentations under two themes: Research and Innovation.
-
Research Stream: Abstracts that describe qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods research studies, or systematic/scoping reviews are invited. A preference will be given to completed studies; however, works in progress may be submitted if preliminary data is available or expected to be available for presentation at the conference.
-
Innovation Stream: Abstracts that describe the design and/or implementation of innovative simulation-based educational strategies, research methodologies, programs, challenges, solutions, or controversies that includes topics suitable for interactive workshops or panel presentations.
CAN-Sim Mission and Vision
The CAN-Sim vision is “Excellence in simulation education and research through networking.” The CAN-Sim mission is “Connecting nurse educators and allied health partners from across Canada and beyond to share knowledge, resources and expertise in areas of simulation education and research.”
In alignment with their mission and vision, CAN-Sim has identified the following strategic priorities:
-
To support collaboration between nurse educators in simulation design and integration in the context of nursing and interdisciplinary teams.
-
To enhance expertise in evidence-based simulation teaching and learning through professional development and mentorship.
-
To enhance simulation-based learning through the sharing of scenarios and resources between members.
-
To implement strategies that promote the development, application, and dissemination of simulation research.
-
To support a continuum of research activities to assist and sustain research among nursing and related healthcare educators.
CAN-Sim Leadership
CAN-Sim is a collaboration of nurse educators for excellence in healthcare simulation education and research. Connection of nurse educators and allied health professionals from across Canada and beyond internationally to share their knowledge, resources and expertise in areas of clinical simulation, which also includes research and education.
CAN-Sim Co-Presidents are Marian Luctkar-Flude, RN, PhD, CCSNE, FCNEI, and Jane Tyerman, RN, PhD, CCSNE. In addition to their roles as Co-presidents, Dr. Luctkar-Flude is a Director and Research Lead, and Dr. Tyerman is Director and Educational Lead. Lillian Chumbley, MA, is an eLearning professional and instructional designer, the third Director of CAN-Sim, and the Lead for Technology. All three of these professionals are the co-founders of CAN-Sim.
“CAN-Sim 2025 is all about networking. CAN-Sim is an international virtual community of nurse educators collaborating to create and evaluate simulation-based educational resources for nursing education. Our conference will be an opportunity for our community to connect in person and share our innovations and research.”
“A CAN-Sim membership is the best bang for your buck…only $75 (Canadian) gives you access to over 100 clinical simulations and over 250 virtual simulations at no cost to your students. We also offer webinars, a monthly newsletter, research grants, and opportunities for research collaborations and mentorship.”
CAN-Sim Endorsements
CAN-Sim endorses the use of best practices, standards, guidelines, and competencies to design, develop, and implement high-quality clinical simulation into nursing education. CAN-Sim specifically endorses the use of:
- CASN: Practice Domain for Baccalaureate Nursing Education: Guidelines for Clinical Placements and Simulation
- The International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL): Healthcare Simulation Standards of Best Practice (HSSOBP)
- Society for Simulation in Healthcare: Healthcare Simulation Dictionary
