Cedars-Sinai’s Inaugural CALSIM 2020 Offers Powerful Clinical Simulation Learning Opportunities June 26-27

CALSIM 2020, presented by Cedars-Sinai and hosted by the Women’s Guild Simulation Center, is a new Medical Simulation conference focusing on integrating healthcare simulation training across complex health systems, recognizing the role that clinical simulation offers as a medium for change in interprofessional education, and explores the benefits of broad engagement among clinical and ancillary department personnel. The event takes place June 27th and 28th in Los Angeles California and has early-bird registration going on now!

This new “everything you need to know about medical simulation training” event will provide participants with evidence-based presentations that explore how clinical simulation can be an innovative tool for learning and training as well as for assessment of performance. Attendees will explore how simulated training can enhance technical and functional expertise, contribute to problem-solving and decision-making skills, and improve interpersonal and communication skills and team based competencies.

Breakout sessions offer learners in-depth exploration of simulation design testing, human factors, and interprofessional education (IPE), as well as insights into the role simulation in healthcare can have in infectious disease management and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Join your colleagues for this 1.5 day adventure into the world of healthcare simulation and learn how evidence-based practices can be put into action through protocols and collaborative approaches that can then be practiced using simulation scenarios.

Who Should Attend?

CALSIM 2020 is designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, nurses, nursing simulation educators, simulation educators, paramedics, simulation operation specialists (simulation technicians), resuscitation scientists and healthcare providers in critical and intensive care, emergency medicine. This invitation also includes including surgeons and educators interested in developing simulation-based training to improve performance, communication and collaboration among members of the interprofessional healthcare team using adult learning principles and an interactive and immersive approach to high risk patient care.

More about the Unique CALSIM Event

The CALSIM 2020 event provides hands-on training designed to inspire, inform and interconnect professionals responsible for various roles in healthcare simulation centers. Medical Simulation is an emerging professional field which currently has little to no formalized educational pathways for entrance. Thus, everyone who starts or continues a career into medical simulation has side-stepped into Healthcare Simulation from another field or industry.

This means that the majority of this community bring with them a wealth of specialized knowledge that their peers may not have. A specialized training meeting to come together and share these best practices gained from years of experience in other fields enables all Sim Techs to walk away with a much greater ability to perform the many responsibilities of their professional duties.

Advantages Over Other Simulation Events

  • Hands-on & Specific Content: From aviation to simulation journey to proactive simulation for high risk surgery, CALSIM2020 is all about the simulation for and beyond critical care.
  • Expanded Knowledge: Attendees return home with an arsenal of valuable skills and knowledge, new techniques that can enhance realism in scenarios, increased reliability and flexibility of a simulation center’s systems, and more.
  • Affordable Registration: CALSIM2020 organizing committee works hard to partner with the right vendor sponsors to make sure the event is the best value for investments made into technical staff. Specially with the early bird discount, this is one of the most affordable but comprehensive simulation conference.
  • Personal Connections: Simulation educators get an opportunity “talk shop” with others to learn better ways to do their job. CALSIM2020 events give attendees the chance to be completely surrounded by their peer community and share best practices, ideas, and innovations with each other. Attendees return home with new ideas and new resources from national and international colleagues working in simulation centers at universities, hospitals, fire departments and more!

Course Co-Directors

Russell D. Metcalfe-Smith, FHEA, MSc, NRP, CHSE-A, CHSOS, leverages his years of innovative healthcare leadership within some of the world’s largest hospital systems to help healthcare systems make bold strategic decisions, reduce costs and improve patient care. As a senior leader, he has developed and put into practice transformative services in the international healthcare sector. From his early days as a registered paramedic and a head of resuscitation services in the United Kingdom, he learned how to maximize outcomes with few resources and little time. This fueled extensive research into more effective solutions, processes and procedures.

He gained experience within-hospital acute care, mental health, primary care and emergency care in Europe—and more recently in the U.S. e then delivered innovative training programs to international healthcare officials and clinicians, developing a world view of healthcare. Such exposure broadens perspectives, offering innovative approaches to change.

Pooja Nawathe, MD, CHSE-A, CHSOS is a pediatric cardiac intensivist by background. She has been a strong simulation enthusiast since her junior faculty years and has conducted several simulation training courses at Cedars Sinai Medical center for the pediatric critical care medicine group. She is actively engaged in several Society of Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and Society of Critical Care Medicine committees. Her research interests are interprofessional education and rapid cycle deliberate practice.

She teaches basic CPR skills to elementary school children at one of the LA Unified School district charter schools as a volunteer. Pooja is devoted to making the simulation education transform patient care and discover new best practices and evidence-based research opportunities. Russell D. Metcalfe-Smith and Pooja Nawathe are two of the four people internationally to hold both the CHSE-A and CHSOS certification from the SSH demonstrating leadership in simulation.
