SIMex 2022 | Clinical Simulation: Transforming Element of the Educational Process
Designed to serve as an opportunity for the healthcare simulation community to grow professionally together with academic experts in clinical simulation-based education for health sciences, the National Autonomous University of Mexico hosted the international healthcare simulation conference, SIMex, from November 15 to November 18, 2022, in Mexico City, Mexico. The conference was organized to help learners generate new ways of perceiving the world through three dimensions: cognitive, self-confidence, and behavioral. At the event, Dr. Melchor Sánchez-Mendiola, Coordinador de Universidad Abierta, Innovación Educativa y Educación a Distancia (CUAIEED) en UNAM , provided the opening keynote address on Transforming Medical Education. He demonstrated research that showed that 46% of medical educators shifted to online learning during the COVID pandemic, and used this to demonstrate the potential of advanced digital clinical simulation technologies to improve medical education.

He recommended the use of Interprofessional education, blended learning technologies like virtual reality and augmented reality, and even the importance of considering the long-term impacts of climate change on exasperating common population health issues. When asked, Dr. Sánchez-Mendiola suggested support for the long-term mandate of clinical simulation to improve education and training outcomes in Mexico and around the world, citing Dr. Cook’s numerous literature reviews that prove the effectiveness of medical simulation to improve outcomes.
Argentinian-based Dr. Carla Prudencio, Coordinadora Educación Continua de Enfermería at the Hospital de Pediatria Garrahan, and Presidente de la sociedad Argentina de simulacion en ciencias de la Salud (SASIM), spoke on the professional formation of simulation. She reminded us to start by identifying our learning objectives and as well shared important considerations regarding selecting the appropriate simulation fidelity.
She also covered the Society for Simulation (SSH) professional certifications including the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) and Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist (CHSOS) designations. She also recommended the audience consider the opportunities and benefits of starting healthcare simulation fellowship programs to encourage the expansion of medical simulation.
Later that morning, Columbian-based Dr. Diego Andreas Diaz Guio, Médico Intensivista, Fellow en Simulación Clínica, Doctor en Educación, and Director de Innovación Docente at Vital Care, and Presidente de la federación latinoamericana de simulación clínica (FLASIC) spoke on using Medical Simulation for Interdisciplinary Education. Next, Dr. Federico Ferrero, PhD, MSc, Asesor Pedagogico Centro de Enseñanza por Simulación – Sociedad Platense de Anestesiología, Profesor adjuntoProfesor adjunto Universidad Nacional de La Plata, and Vice President of FLASIC spoke on “Feedback as a Transforming Element of Learning”.

Finally, HealthySimulation.com Founder/CEO Lance Baily provided two presentations on the “Past, Present, and Future of Healthcare Simulation” as well as “Is Virtual Reality the Catalyst to Mass Clinical Simulation Adoption?”. SIMex Activities in Spanish
A partir del 2017, cada año se lleva en la Ciudad de México el encuentro internacional de simulación clínica SIMex, el cual este año presenta su sexta edición bajo el eslogan “La Simulación Clínica: elemento transformador del proceso educativo” y se lleva a cabo en el Centro de Exposiciones y Congresos de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). este encuentro internacional reúne a grandes personalidades de la simulación en ciencias de la salud para compartir experiencias, avances, retos y sobre todo brinda un espacio para generar enlaces entre los apasionados por la simulación.
El encuentro cuenta con un día destinado a talleres pre-congreso donde los asistentes pueden elegir entre múltiples talleres para desarrollar habilidades, profundizar temas de interés e interactuar con varios de los congresistas antes de los días de conferencia. Algunos de los talleres llevados a cabo este año fueron: Debriefing TALK, diseño de escenarios, modelos de realimentación, manejo de recursos en crisis, implementación de simulación híbrida, paciente estandarizado con profesionales de artes dramáticas, administración y gestión de centros de simulación, acreditación de centros de simulación, ambientes híbridos con pacientes virtuales y vídeo análisis, bases del debriefing, debriefing difícil, evaluación con simulación, entre otros. Estos talleres se desarrollaron en dos sedes principales: el Centro de Enseñanza y Certificación de Aptitudes Médicas (CECAM) de la Facultad de Medicina y en la Unidad de Posgrado.
El ciclo de conferencias matutinas ocurre durante los próximos tres días, con la participación de referentes de la simulación clínica nacionales e internacionales como el Dr. Melchor Sánchez Mendiola, Lic. En enfermería Carla Prudencio, Dr. Diego Andrés Díaz Guio, BA EMT-B Lance Baily, Dr. Peter Dieckmann, Dr. Yasuharu Okuda, Dr. Federico Ferrero, PhD Kimberly Louis Leighton, Dr. Jose Luis Medina, entre otros. Por las tardes, Los congresistas nacionales e internacionales cuentan con espacios más pequeños y especializados donde se ofrecen “Charlas con el experto” con diversos temas donde los asistentes pueden elegir su tema de interés y tener una interacción más cercana y directa con el congresista.
En el encuentro SIMex 2022 además se realiza un concurso de presentación de trabajos para todos aquellos asistentes que quieran compartir sus más recientes investigaciones, proyectos y avances a través de la presentación de vídeos, exposición de carteles y charlas con la técnica PechaKucha.
En la sección de expositores, se encuentran las empresas para compartir sus recursos tecnológicos, software, hardware y simuladores para que los asistentes puedan conocerlos y enterarse de toda la gama con la que cuenta la simulación.
