Healthcare Simulation Week 2022 Celebrates ‘Excellence in a New Era’
Each year, the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) hosts Healthcare Simulation Week – an observance dedicated to celebrating clinical simulation professionals worldwide. This year the weeklong observance was held from September 12 to September 16, 2022, with the theme being “Excellence in a New Era.” Simulationists from all over the world – from Reykjavík, Iceland to Auckland to New Zealand, Johannesburg, South Africa, and Khon Kaen, Thailand – were granted the opportunity to take part in several insightful healthcare simulation sessions hosted by SSH. This HealthySimulation.com article highlights these sessions as well as other planned for the week.

Ultimately, this year’s theme, “Excellence in a New Era,” put the spotlight on each and every clinical simulation program’s efforts to position healthcare simulation as a leader across their respective medical organization. A grassroots effort to celebrate the entire industry, Healthcare Simulation Week also provided activities to showcase SSH’s own offerings across the wider community. To demonstrate the event’s reach, in 2021 a record 541 pins from 46 countries were posted on the Healthcare Simulation Week Participation Map!

“Each fall, during the week following September 11, I have watched this amazing campaign evolve and grow over the past five years from a simple, ‘What if we had a week to celebrate our industry?’ into annually celebrating ‘all of us’ as we promote the healthcare simulation profession through standards and ethics, and champion healthcare simulation through advocating, sharing, facilitating, and collaborating,” shared SSH President Haru Okuda, MD, FACEP, in the Healthcare Simulation Week toolkit. “In that spirit, I want to reiterate ‘the why’ of this week. It is about YOU! It is a celebration of your work, your time, your effort, your passion, and your belief that healthcare simulation helps build the foundation of a stronger healthcare system that, in turn, provides the best patient care possible in our communities.”

More About SSH
With over 4,000 members SSH, aka The Society for Simulation in Healthcare, is the world’s largest organization dedicated to medical simulation. The nonprofit’s mission is to advance the application and promote the art, science, and practice of healthcare simulation through global engagement. SSH seeks to reduce errors in patient care and improve clinical performance through the use of simulation.
SSH seeks to improve performance and reduce errors in patient care through the use of simulation. Established in 2004 by professionals using simulation for education, testing, and research in health care, SSH membership includes physicians, nurses, allied health and paramedical personnel, researchers, educators, and developers from around the globe. SSH fosters the improvement and application of simulation-based modalities such as human patient simulators, virtual reality, standardized patients, and task trainers. Recognizing that simulation represents a paradigm shift in health care education, SSH promotes improvements in simulation technology, educational methods, practitioner assessment, and patient safety that promote better patient care and can improve patient outcomes.
A major venue for advancing simulation in medicine is the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH). A precursor to IMSH was the first Society for Technology in Anesthesia (STA) meeting with simulation as the focus in 1998. In January 2001, the First International Meeting for Medical Simulation (IMMS) was held. This became the International Meeting for Simulation in Healthcare with an official name change in 2007 to reflect the diversity of SSH.
