Axon Park Expands VR Course Offerings to Meet Virtual Learning Demand

As more medical training facilities turn to healthcare simulation as a virtual means of instruction amid COVID-19, virtual reality and e-learning solutions have been met with demand like never before. To help meet this need, virtual simulation company Axon Park has significantly expanded their VR course catalog, from one to over 20 categories, making it the most diverse set of VR training materials offered in the healthcare space. Using VR, learners can “teleport” into the digital campus where they can then explore different categories of courses to learn varying subjects and skills, streamlining access to a wide range of premier interactive VR learning content.

“The significant body of new research demonstrating superior outcomes for students who train in VR, plus the current limitations of in-person learning, have led to a large increase in demand for medical VR training over the last year. Now more than ever, students want the option to learn from anywhere, and instructors are desperate for ways to deliver experiential learning remotely. We’ve been working closely with universities, hospitals and content partners to develop a catalog of key skills and learning material to support this growing demand.”

Since the company’s founding in 2019, Axon Park’s first course was “PPE Donning & Doffing” which teaches medical VR clinical skills. Now, Axon Park’s courses are broken down into the following categories: procedural skills, soft skills and foundational courses. The company lists notable clients such as Mount Sinai, The US Department of Veterans Affairs, the University of Alabama and more, and Dr. Farrukh Jafri from the Harvard Medical School PhD program is quoted on the company’s website as saying “Axon Park is far more advanced than anything else I’ve seen. I highly recommend it.”

Here are some detailed descriptions of Axon Park’s latest VR courses:

Human Anatomy: Experience a fully immersive 3D exploration of the human body. BodyMap is a medically accurate representation of the human body that can be manipulated in 3D virtual reality. Our strict data reconstruction and design methods set us apart and provide users with realistic visualizations of every detail of the human body. Users may interact with the virtual body in numerous ways, including walking into the virtual body for a detailed inspection of internal organs, grabbing out anatomical structures for a closer look and simulating instrument insertion techniques with instant haptic feedback.

Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy: This interactive bone marrow aspiration and biopsy VR course takes place in a realistic, zero-risk simulated 3D environment where learners can physically practice the procedure on a virtual patient. In training mode, the step-by-step guidelines enable a scaffolded learning experience, while the assessment mode provides the user with immediate feedback as mistakes are made. The user can only pass the assessment if the entire procedure is performed in the correct sequence without mistakes. Learner performance can be tracked through an advanced analytics portal, empowering administrators to manage compliance, identify areas for improvement, and gain a deeper understanding of their learners.

Burn Wound Care: This program on Burn Wound Care helps nurses practice the steps involved in caring for burn wounds. The lessons are set in photo realistic environments where learners practice the procedure on a virtual patient. The step-by-step directions provide a guided approach to the program, assisted with regular feedback on performance.

Central Sterile Processing: The VR training modules in this sterile processing program are designed to help learners practice each step in the several procedures associated with the instrument sterilization process. Practicing in a virtual environment creates a real-world scenario helping learners better associate with actual working conditions and get seasoned for real-life jobs.

Central Venous Catheter: This interactive central venous catheter (CVC) VR course takes place in a realistic, zero-risk virtual environment where learners can use physics-based interactions to practice the procedure on a virtual patient. In training mode, the step-by-step guides enable a scaffolded learning experience, while the assessment mode provides the user with immediate feedback as mistakes are made. The user can only pass the assessment if the entire procedure is performed in the correct sequence without mistakes. Learner performance can be tracked through an advanced analytics portal, empowering administrators to manage compliance, identify areas for improvement, and gain a deeper understanding of their learners.

Electrocardiography: This interactive electrocardiography VR course takes place in a realistic, zero-risk virtual environment where learners can use physics-based interactions to practice the procedure on a virtual patient.

Endotracheal Intubation: This interactive endotracheal intubation VR course takes place in a realistic, zero-risk virtual environment where learners can use physics-based interactions to practice the procedure on a virtual patient.

Phlebotomy: This interactive phlebotomy VR course takes place in a realistic, zero-risk virtual environment where learners can use physics-based interactions to practice the procedure on a virtual patient.

Physical Therapy Aid (PTA): The lessons in this VR training program are set in photorealistic virtual environments and present learners with step-by-step directions. Performing each task helps those engaged to learn and polish their skills to the desired level of perfection.

In the future, Axon Park will continue building out the campus and expanding their catalog to include hundreds of courses across a wide range of subjects.

Note: If an institution or healthcare system is currently creating VR training modules and would like to distribute them through the virtual campus, Axon Park extends the initiation to collaborate. From there, the developer can sit back and let the passive revenue flow as users sign up for their courses. For content developed in partnership with Axon Park, the developer’s staff will get unlimited use of the content. Together, the company hopes to expand VR training’s impact across the healthcare industry, making high quality experiential learning more accessible to people around the world.
