California Sim Group Supports Request for RNs to Take Clinical Performance Assessment Survey – $50 Gift Card
The next SoCal Simulation Collaborative meeting will be on May 12th from 8-1100 at UCLA. Anyone interested in simulation is welcome to attend, no membership or long term commitment expected. The meeting will be packed with interesting sim information including:
- A presentation by our host, Dr. Mary Ann Shinnick, PhD, ACNP entitled “Validation of “Time to Task” Performance Assessment Method in Simulation” .
- A demonstration of the new CAE birthing manikin Lucina (118K)
- A tour of the Sim spaces with time to explore the beautiful UCLA campus.

Are you an RN with at least 5 years of experience in an ICU, ER, Step Down or Telemetry Adult Unit? If so, you qualify for the study detailed below:
I am the Principal Investigator for a study entitled, “Validation of a Method to Objectively Assess Clinical Performance”. The purpose of this study is to generate anonymous videos of expert and novice nurses in order to compare clinical performance in a simulation experience using different methods of evaluation. The goal is to validate (test) an objective measure of performance in a simulation that is superior to subjective evaluations. It is hoped to lead to a better, more consistent method of evaluation for all nurses.
A copy of the IRB approved consent form is attached to this email. If you desire, I am available to meet with you to describe the study in person at a time and place which is convenient for you. If you agree to participate, you may sign the consent at that time or when you arrive for the study. Your participation in this study is voluntary. The benefits of participating include the contribution of knowledge to nursing science with comparison data on assessment methods of clinical performance in a simulation, a substitute for actual clinical performance. There are no anticipated risks to participating in the study.
Confidentiality is extremely important in this study. All of the information obtained from your participation will be kept confidential. Your consent form will be kept separate from the data and the data will be recorded in such a way that you will not be identified. The data will be available to the investigator only. It will not be available to anyone else, including employers or supervisors. Results from the research will be reported as aggregate data and there will be no identifiable features. This study has no bearing on any employment or any course at UCLA.
Your participation in the research is completely voluntary. You can choose whether to be in this study or not. Even if you agree to participate in this study, you may withdraw your consent at any time without consequences of any kind. However, participation in this study must be done on off-work hours.
If you have any questions or concerns about the research, please feel free to contact: Mary Ann Shinnick, PhD (Principal Investigator) UCLA School of Nursing, 700 Tiverton, Los Angeles, CA 90032, (310) 794-4219.
I want to make it clear you may withdraw your consent at any time and discontinue participation in this study without penalty. You are not waiving any legal claims, rights or remedies because of your participation in this research study. If you have questions regarding your rights as a research subject, you may contact the Office for Protection of Research Subjects, 11000 Kinross Ave, Suite 102; Box 951694; Los Angeles, CA 90095-1694; (310) 825- 7122 or email [email protected]
You may keep the consent home for a couple of weeks and read it over or consult with family, if desired. Please do not hesitate to call or email me if you have any questions.
Sign up for a time on May 10th at: https://doodle.com/poll/4s566pfdw9s5tze9
Once you complete a pre-test, post-test, two short, basic medical-surgical simulations (5 minutes each) and a demographic form, a Thank You of a $50 Amazon Gift Card will be awarded to you!
